While some distillers create gins where tea is a core part of the spirit itself (infused or distilled with botanicals), others add tea flavours later, perhaps as a syrup or a separate mix. But we believe few do it as uniquely as we do at Rutland Square Spirits with our special "Oolong White tea," making it a fundamental part of our exceptional Chai Spiced Scottish Gin.
You might wonder, "Oolong White tea? Is that a real kind of tea?"
And that's a great question, because it's not a common type. Oolong tea is partly aged, somewhere between green and black teas, with many flavours from flowery to roasted. White tea, on the other hand, is barely processed, just dried, and known for its soft, sweet taste. So, what exactly is this "Oolong White tea" that's so deeply infused into Rutland Square Gin?
A Special Tea from Tea Capital of India - Dibrugarh, Assam
The answer lies in our dedication to our roots and a personal family story. Our "Oolong White tea" comes from a single farm, picked during the first harvest of the year, in Dibrugarh, Assam, India. This is important because Assam is famous for strong black teas, not the delicate kind you'd expect from a white or light oolong.
This means we're not just mixing existing oolong and white teas or adding a tea flavour on top. Instead, we found a tea that, while from an oolong plant, has been processed very gently, much like a white tea. This new way of processing, especially from Assam, creates a tea that's hard to put into a simple box. It captures the fresh, "zesty" smell of the first spring pick, giving a "rich yet clean and fresh liquid" with clear floral notes.
For our gin, this means:
-
Bright Smell: The tea adds a lively, fresh, and often flowery top note that makes it instantly different.
-
Soft Complexity: Unlike stronger tea flavours that might be added separately, this "Oolong White tea" brings subtle layers of taste that go well with, instead of overpowering, our other plant ingredients.
-
Good Balance: When mixed with our chai spices (like cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger), the tea creates a nice balance. It stops the gin from being too spicy or heavy, adding a gentle sweetness and refreshing feel that makes the whole drink better.
This "Oolong White tea" is more than just an ingredient; it shows how much we care about unique quality. It's a rare and often expensive tea, and for good reason. In our gin, its delicate yet rich taste perfectly balances the strong juniper. The result is a truly special experience: the first sip gives you the warm feeling of our chai spices, followed by the smooth, clean finish that only our "Oolong White tea" can give. Give it a try and taste the amazing depth and balance this special tea brings to our Chai Spiced Scottish Gin.
